Areas of expertise

BIRC has assembled a set of state-of-the-art facilities in a state-of-the-art research facility in the Partners Research Building at 65 Landsdowne Street, Cambridge MA. BIRC is equipped for polymer chemistry, microfabrication, microfluidics, BioMEMS, cell and tissue culture, histology and molecular biology.

BIRC research interests and capabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Synthesis and characterization of polymeric biomaterials
  • Synthesis and characterization of inorganic nanomaterials
  • Development of hybrid bio-nanomaterials
  • Engineering medical materials including surgical adhesives and sealants
  • Engineering of physiologically relevant tissues and organs
  • Engineering biomaterials to direct stem cell differentiation
  • Design and development of drug delivery systems
  • Bio-microfabrication technologies including 3D bioprinting, microfluidics, contact printing, and lithography
  • Design and fabricate BioMEMS including flexible electronics, biosensors, and point-of-care testing (POCT) devices
  • Design and development of humanized microphysiological models for drug and toxin screening
